Protect, Preserve, and Defend

How a love for the environment transformed into a lifetime of writing and fighting for the land

While growing up in rural Wisconsin, Sigurd Olson lived to explore the great outdoors. His love of nature guided everything from where he chose to live to his career. After many years of teaching and writing about natural history and ecology, he became a leader in the wilderness preservation movement. Inspired by the landscapes of Wisconsin and Minnesota, Olson worked to protect wild lands across North America and helped draft the Wilderness Act of 1964. No matter what obstacles he faced, Olson stood up for what he believed in and helped protect the lands he loved.
