THE MAGIC TICKET
A story of the emotional growth of a young boy who grapples with the unimaginable death of his sister but who finds solace in libraries and books.
Lakewood, CO — July 16– Beautiful and moving, The Magic Ticket, author David Hicks explores the ways in which children handle grief and loss and the healing power of books and libraries. When the main character’s beloved sister dies and his parents are too grief-stricken to attend to him, the little boy must figure out how to process what has happened on his own. When he visits his local library and a kind librarian hands him a “magic ticket” (library card) he finds an unexpected sancutary in the world of books. Combining empathetic and gentle storytelling with engaging illustrations, The Magic Ticket highlights the following:
Having big, sometimes scary feelings is okay
Public libraries and librarians are crucial to our communities
Books are a great way to understand those big emotions and make us feel supported and understood
Sharing books and reading can be a healing experience
As young children are dealing with grief and loss more than ever before, in a variety of different ways, this book is not only a tool for parents/librarians/teachers/counselors to facilitate conversations about those feelings, but it’s also a reminder of the sanctuary that can be found in our public libraries and the books they house. Supplementing the book are resources created and curated by the Eluna Network, the largest national bereavement program for children and teens grieving the death of someone close to them. Could reading be the gateway to understanding, and coping with, loss?
